Dear Friend, Sara Schewe was my godchild. That was my good fortune. I like to think that I can keep that connection vital as chair of the Committe to keep Sara's Spirit Alive, the branch of Sara's Wish Foundation that is responsible for keeping supporters informed of the Foundation's activities and projects. Anne and Charlie have asked me to thank you once again for the support you have given them, both emotionally and financially, in the months that have passed since the March 27, 1996 bus crash that took this wonderful, loving daughter Sara from them and from us. Sara's Wish Foundation, a non-profit, tax exempt foundation, was formally created this June to honor Sara by awarding scholarships to students who share Sara's talent and zest for life and by striving to make a difference in the world by making student study abroad programs safer. "Safe And Rewarding Adventures" will be the Foundation's motto. That is our hope and dream. The mission statement of the Foundation is as follows. Sara's Wish Foundation is established to perpetuate the memory of Sara Christie Schewe, a beautiful and loving young woman who was at the brink of becoming an extraordinary adult. The vision for this Foundation is to enhance the quality of life in areas reflecting Sara's living spirit. The Foundation's Mission will concentrate in two areas:
To meet the first goal, Sara's Wish Foundation is aggressively helping students and their parents to become aware of how to proactively avoid making mistakes when sending their children to the far-reaches of the earth to explore and discover. Anne and Charlie and the other parents who lost their daughters wrote an article entitled, "Every Parent's Worst Nightmare." We have inclosed a copy for you. "Every Parent's Worst Nightmare" has been e-mailed to study abroad program administrators across the country and has already prompted changes in safty procedures. As a result of this article and preliminary meetings with the Council on International Educational Exchanges (CIEE), within the year CIEE plans to publish and distribute a pamphlet offering safety issues in travel. Sara's Wish Foundation will work to ensure that our children's safety, above all else, is the highest priority within the influential associations governing international programs. To keep Sara's spirit alive, we are developing scholarship programs with educational institutions that will enable others like Sara to reach for the stars and become all that they might be. We are planning an art competition program to commemorate Sara's artistic talent. The Foundation will acknowledge talented young artists by awarding scholarships for superior achievement. This event is planned for spring, 1998. We are working with both Deerfield Academy and Georgetown University, Sara's schools, to provide assistance to deserving students who have the potential to excel and contribute as Sara did. The first scholarships will be awarded next year in honor of the fifth anniversary of Sara's high school graduation. Thank you for helping us keep Sara's spirit alive. Thank you for helping us make sure a tragedy like Anne and Charlie suffered does not happen to another child. We welcome your help, ideas, and continued financial support to keep Sara's Wish. You are in our prayers and we will keep you informed of the Foundation's progress. Sara wll always be with us. Sara's Wish Foundation will keep her goals and ideals alive. We will make a difference . . . in her name. With special thanks, Wendy, Kohler, Chair The Committee to Keep Sara's Spirit AlivePS: The success of Sara's Wish Foundation's safety awareness efforts and scholarship program is dependent upon the continuing financial support of all of us who were touched by Sara's life and spirit.
