Safety Precautions Can Make All the Difference In the World

Living and traveling in a foreign culture may present certain risks. Yet, studying abroad or working overseas can be a life-changing educational experience. Sara’s Wish Foundation has developed a set of guidelines (link that scrolls you to the bottom of the page to the guidelines links) that promote student safety – and that may make all the difference in the world.  Sara’s Wish urges you to feel empowered to make informed decisions about your transportation and travel safety while you work or study abroad.

SAFETI

In addition to using our Safety Guidelines, be sure to visit the Safety Abroad First site.  It offers an extensive, alphabetically ordered index of travel safety tips and links, answering almost every question you might have during your travel planning process. This is an invaluable resource for students planning on studying or working overseas.

International Travel Planning For Students

Learning about student safety before you travel internationally can actually be an enriching experience.  You will learn more about your study abroad program (link to Evaluating Study Abroad programs) and the culture, politics, and environment (link to Pre-departure) of the foreign country you will be visiting.  While traveling (link to While Traveling), you will feel more confident about such important issues as road conditions and transportation safety, available health services, and locations that you may want to avoid for political reasons.  Student travel, even when participating in a study abroad program, takes planning, but the rewards are worth it.

    Have a Safe Journey.
    That is Sara’s Wish!

Remember the Three Rules that could SAVE YOUR LIFE

  1. ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SEATBELT - INSIST upon seat belts in any moving vehicle.
  2. AVOID NIGHT TRAVEL - and NEVER TRAVEL at NIGHT in an underdeveloped country.
  3. BE EMPOWERED TO SPEAK OUT -  say "SLOW DOWN," "STOP," "LET ME OUT" - three of the most powerful phrases a traveler can learn.
